Looking at a bad breed

The Aryan Brotherhood originated in San Quentin prison in 1967. Originally, this gang was established to provide protection for white individuals from black and Hispanic groups, most specifically the Mexican Mafia. Some of the original members of the AB migrated from a 1950s gang known as the "Bluebirds." Other names used in the past were the "Diamond Tooth Gang" and the "Nazi Gang."

Today, they number about 15,000 members in and out of prison. In March 2006, four AB leaders were indicted for numerous crimes, including murder, conspiracy, drug trafficking, and racketeering. According to the FBI, although the gang makes up less than one percent of the prison population, it is responsible for up to 26% of murders in the federal prison system. Read this week's full story.

Regarding The god complex and Criminal justice ethics - a view from the top
I agree that an ethical foundation is absolutely necessary to avoid many of the problems encountered in corrections / law enforcement careers. I try to relay my experiences as a CO, Sergeant, and Lieutenant to the students in such a way as to counter the pop culture picture of the field.

Articles such as the previous one on the God Complex and the current one from Mr. Eastvedt dramatically help the students approach the field with realistic attitudes. I often assign your website for reading assignments, but this article was especially germane.

Texas Juvenile Probation Commission Conference

The Texas Juvenile Probation Commission will host "BEHIND CLOSED DOORS: Preventing, Responding, Investigating and Prosecuting Sexual Abuse in Juvenile Justice Facilities" from December 10-12, 2008 at the Omni Bayfront Hotel in Corpus Christi, Texas.

This year's conference will gather renowned national authors, speakers, and practitioners to discuss the complex issues surrounding sexual abuse of juvenile offenders in correctional facility settings. This multi-tracked conference will focus on prevention of sexual abuse in facilities, responding to sexual abuse, and effective investigation and prosecution of sexual abuse.

Its goal is to provide attendees with the tools, training, and resources to formulate comprehensive and effective protocols for their facility to ensure that incarcerated youth are protected from sexual abuse.
